Moovit unveils New York City’s 10 busiest transit stations and subway lines

New York, New York  – September 2024

As New Yorkers settle back into routine, knowing the most frequented transit stations and subway lines can help travelers avoid the crowds

Moovit, creator behind the #1 commuter app used by over 1.5 billion users in 3,500 cities across 112 countries, is unveiling New York City’s 10 most frequented public transit stations and 10 busiest subway lines, two weeks since people began to settle back into their offices and schools.

The free Moovit app offers users a smart mobility experience to easily get to their destination using any mode of public and shared transportation. Moovit also owns and operates the world’s largest repository of transit and urban mobility data, amassing up to six billion anonymous data points a day. For this study, Moovit tapped its anonymous data to reveal the most frequented transit stops by New York City users, as well as the most popular subway lines. Locals and tourists alike can make more informed decisions when traveling to understand which areas usually have larger crowds.

The data is based on Moovit’s app usage from September 5-19, 2024 and lists stations according to the most searched destinations. It includes the following transport types: subway, bus, and train.

Busiest NYC Transit Stations:

  1. Port Authority Bus Terminal
  2. Times Square
  3. Penn Station
  4. Grand Central Station

“With summer vacations over and the school year ramping up again, we can use Moovit’s comprehensive data repository to gain insight into typical mobility patterns, and offer people alternatives for easier travel,” said Ziv Kabaretti, Moovit’s VP Product. “For example, if transit riders want to avoid morning and afternoon rush hour crowds, they could get off at nearby stops close to their destination instead.”

Moovit’s iOS, Android, and Web app is available for free to transit riders. Moovit combines official information from local sources in the tri-state area as well as crowdsourced information to calculate the best route for each journey with urban mobility options like subway, train, bus, ferry, light rail, cable car, Uber, Lyft, bike, scooter, car-share, and more.

Moovit provides users real-time arrival information so they know exactly when their bus or train is arriving, a Live Directions feature with Get Off Alerts to provide step-by-step guidance for the entire journey, and Service Alerts so they can avoid disruptions on usual lines and plan their journey accordingly.
