Moovit unveils Live Location vehicle feature, cutting down commute stress and uncertainty

Moovit now displays the live location of public transit vehicles via icons moving across the map in real-time, providing users greater insight into their routes’ progress

San Francisco – November, 2022

Moovit, a leading Mobility as a Service (MaaS) solutions provider and creator of the #1 urban mobility app, is announcing a new feature enabling users to decrease uncertainty and stress from their commute. Now, Moovit users can follow their transit line’s movements along the map in real-time for an additional layer of reliable information on route progress. This new feature, available for buses, trains, trams, subways, ferries, and even cable cars that have GPS tracking installed, is rolling out in more than 220 cities across 38 countries with more to come.

How many times have you stood at the station when, suddenly, the arrival time of your transit line has been updated due to an unexpected delay? To provide users with extra context on where their line is at any given moment, Moovit is rolling out a new Live Location feature available on Moovit’s iOS and Android apps. Live Location aims to help users reduce uncertainty during their commute by offering richer data on where their line is, on the map, in real-time.

Riders can also see when the data was last updated (when the signal was last received from the vehicle), and receive service alerts for that line — all in the same screen.

Live Location can be launched from every Moovit screen with the Action Bar, and is in addition to the real-time arrival countdown that Moovit displays in green.

To see where their line currently is, Moovit users simply need to:

  1. Tap on the ‘Live Location” button on the Action Bar located at the bottom of the Itinerary, Line Details, or Station Details screens
  2. A map will open up and an icon will be displayed moving across the map, allowing the user to follow the vehicle’s movements in real-time once it departs along its journey

“A key part of planning your trip and traveling with peace of mind is knowing when the bus will reach the station you’re waiting at,” said Yovav Meydad, Moovit’s Chief Growth and Marketing Officer. “This new Live Location feature ensures that transit riders have access to an additional layer of reliable information on route progress.”

Moovit utilizes several layers of guidance to help users get to their destination with confidence. Once a user selects a route, they can click on “Start” to enter the Live Directions screen where they will be provided with step-by-step navigational instructions. Users can choose to turn on “Get off alerts”, to be notified before it’s time to deboard at the right stop. Additionally, Moovit’s Way Finder feature uses augmented reality to place digital directions on top of the camera view to make it even easier to locate correct stations, underground entrances, and provide overall extra guidance.

Moovit’s Live Location feature will begin rolling out on the App Store today, with Google Play soon to follow.
