Transit Equity Day & Moovit’s Core Belief

Published: February 12, 2024

On February 4th, public transit agencies in cities throughout the United States – which include numerous Moovit partners – celebrate Transit Equity Day to promote equity in public transportation and raise awareness about the critical importance of transit to all members of the community, including the traditionally underserved.

First celebrated Federally in 2021, Transit Equity Day commemorates the life and legacy of iconic civil rights leader Rosa Parks on her birthday – and declares that public transit is a civil right.

February 4, 2024 would have been Parks’ 111th birthday.

In 1955, Ms. Parks refused to give up her seat on a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama in protest – and to demand an end to segregation on transit systems. In observance of Transit Equity Day, many public transportation systems offer free rides for all passengers, as well as host ceremonies with local officials. Many leave a seat vacant on buses in honor of Parks.

The Moovit app – which has grown to be relied on by more than 1.7 billion people, in over 3,500 cities, and across 112 countries – was created with our fundamental belief in Mobility as a basic human right for everyone.

The essence of this philosophy – which has guided and motivated us since its inception – is embodied in Transit Equity Day. We believe that Mobility which is accessible to all opens opportunities and enables equitable public transportation – regardless of where you may live.

Mobility has a far-reaching impact on so many aspects of our lives, including education, employment, independence, personal safety, accessibility, and the environment.

We remain committed to empowering cities, businesses, and people everywhere to enjoy a better quality of life – by helping to remove the limitations and barriers of urban mobility – and embracing the ideals of Transit Equity Day, on February 4th and throughout the entire year.
